Rear Admiral Illangakoon
Rajans old boy Rear Admiral Illangakone is invited as the chief guest for this year's college aletic meet. Below is about a heroic act performed by Rear Admiral Illangakone in the war front.
Saving troops under siege at Mullativu
LTTE takes upper hand in Vanni
Although the army managed to save Batticaloa, the situation in the Northern Province remained extremely dicey, with the LTTE stepping up attacks on Kokavil, Mankulam, Kilinochchi and Elephant Pass detachments, which had been inaccessible overland along with the Mullaitivu detachment since the onset of eelam war II. It would be pertinent to discuss LTTE attempt to overrun the army detachment at Mullaitivu in early August. The LTTE would have easily succeeded if not for a sea borne rescue mission launched by the army.
Operation Sea Breeze
The then Lieutenant Commander Lakshman Illangakoon, Commanding officer of the SLNS Kandula (Landing Craft Medium) had been tasked with landing troops required for the rescue mission. Illangakoon, currently navy's eastern commander recalled the circumstances under which the rescue mission was launched. Having arrived in Trincomalee to take stock of the situation, Maj. Gen. Denzil Kobbekaduwa had summoned a meeting at the Plantain Point, Trincomalee to explore ways and means of launching a rescue mission. The navy had been represented at the conference by the then eastern commander Rear Admiral F. N. Q. Wickremaratne and Lieutenant Commander Illangakoon. Dashing Illangakoon was there in his capacity as the Commanding Officer of the Landing Craft. Illangakoon said: "As we had never attempted a large scale sea borne assault under similar conditions, Major General Kobbekaduwa wanted to engage close air reconnaissance of the targeted area before the troops moved in." Having excused himself from air surveillance mission, Rear Admiral Wickremaratne instructed Illangakoon to accompany Major General Kobbekaduwa on the reconnaissance mission. Shortly thereafter they were airborne from the nearby China Bay airfield. Having flown over the besieged Mullaitivu base in the afternoon, those conducting the operation had decided on a spot south of Mullaitivu to land troops. The army had agreed with Illangakoon's suggestion to carry out a mock landing north of Mullaitivu to facilitate the actual landing at first light. The navy had been seriously concerned about the operation as it lacked any experience in conducting amphibious assault on the Mullaitivu beach. Illangakoon said: "I felt a mock landing could give us the much required time and space to secure a beachhead. We monitored LTTE units, particularly those equipped with rocket propelled grenades rushing towards the beach when the ship deployed to carry out the mock attack advanced towards the beach. But soon they realised it was nothing but a deceptive maneuver and turned towards the direction of Kandula carrying troops. We were soon being fired upon. On the instructions of the army, navy gunners opened fire, though initially the navy was reluctant. The navy felt that the battle between the raiding party and the LTTE was too close for comfort. But the army insisted we fired at those resisting the beach landing." The sea borne troops comprised Special Forces and Sri Lanka Light Infantry (SLLI). The senior officer in charge of the operation was Major General Kobbekaduwa. Some of the country's elite officers and veterans of many battles throughout the war, namely Gamini Hettiarachchi and Jayavi Fernando were on the ground. They were joined by Major General Kobbekaduwa and Janaka Perera. Special Forces and SLLI fought a series of battles before they reached those under siege at Mullaitivu.

Rajans - Under-19 Soccer Champions
Dharmaraja College, Kandy, became Central Province Schools Under-19 soccer champions when they scored a thrilling 1-0 win over Zahira College, Gampola in the finals of the soccer tournament organised by the Ministry of Education - Central Province and played at Weeguluwete grounds, Gampola. At half time there was no scoring.
Mid way in the second half, the Rajans took play into their opponents territory and a well directed cross kick by right extreme and skipper L.D. Thanthrige saw centre forward Kanishka Kumara collecting the ball and brush past two defenders to lob the ball into the net to put them in the lead.
A fierce battle followed with the Zahirians making a determined effort to obtain the equaliser to keep themselves in the game but the Rajans put up a wall-like defence to stop their opponents.

Arjuna assures assistance to Rajans turf and grounds
By Upananda Jayasundera - Kandy Sports Special Corr - Sunday Observer 25/05/08.
Arjuna Ranatunga - the Chairman of the Interim Committee of Sri Lanka Cricket, is a no nonsense man and he has made himself clear in all the issues that he has faced after taking the high-profile seat. Seeing is believing.... This is a famous saying and the Chairman of the Interim Committee of Sri Lanka Cricket Arjuna Ranatunga accompanied by the Principal of Dharmaraja S.M. Keerthiratne, KDCA President Tilina Tennakoon and officials of the OBA of Dharmaraja College take a close look at the renovated turf wicket and grounds, (below): Sprinklers at work getting the ground ready for cricket. Pictures by Upananda Jayasundera - Kandy Sports Special Corr. It is an accepted fact that one has to put ones house in order before going into other details regarding the game of cricket and Ranatunga - the World Cup winning captain of Sri Lanka, had made his intentions clear about cleaning up the administration where he has assumed office.
He made a trip to Kandy to inspect the work in progress at the Dharmaraja College new lay-out of the turf wicket and Ranatunga agreed to look into the possibilities of giving the final touches to the playground and the turf strips. Asked as to why took the extreme rigid decisions of removing some officials when he assumed duties as Chairman of the Sri Lanka Cricket Interim Committee, Ranatunga assured justice will be done to all and he said that everything will be made known as he will call up a press conference to expose all those who have misuse funds of the Board and all the shortcomings of the Boards activities. Ranatunga was somewhat surprised that cricket being very popular in the country that only two girl schools in Kandy are playing the hard ball game - thats Pushpadana and Mahamaya. He said that in India in almost all the districts and provinces, the game of cricket is being played and thats why the standard of cricket in India is at a high level. The Principal of Dharmaraja College S.M. Keerthiratne, former President of the OBA Dharmaraja Jagath Samarasinghe, KDCA President Tilina Tennakoon and other officials of the Dharmaraja OBA were present at the occasion.
